At Lightning Ridge we're about to build the Australian Opal Centre, an amazing national museum in an energy-efficient, 100metre long, two storey underground building filled with glittering treasures and stories of the people who found them. You'll marvel at Australia's greatest public collection of precious opals and fossils made of opal - jewel like relics from the Age of Dinosaurs. You'll see how opal is mined and learn how to turn rough opal into gemstones. And you'll share in the colourful stories for which people of Australia's opal fields are famous. All of this, in a multi-million dollar building that'll knock your socks off. Designed by world famous Australian architects Glenn Murcutt and Wendy Lewin, the Centre will generate its own electricity, collect and recycle rainwater and be inculated by the Earth.
