The town of Walgett

Walgett - An Overview

Walgett, famous as the location of the world's largest temporary wheat silo in the Southern Hemisphere, is situated approximatley 694km northwest of Sydney and 285km northwest of Dubbo. Walgett, meaning the meeting of two rivers, was proclaimed a settlement in March of 1885.

Walgett Likes to describe itself as 'The Gateway to the Opal Fields' because it is an ideal place to stay before heading off to the huge opal mining settlement of Lightning Ridge (76km) and the smaller opal fields at Grawin, Glengarry and the Sheepyard Opal Fields, all of which are located northwest of Walgett. In reality it is also a really nice place to stay where the people are friendly and the sense of 'outback' is cleverly incorporated within the facilities and infrastructure of a larger town.

The town is located at the junction of the Namoi and Barwon Rivers along the Kamilaroi Highway and at the beginning of the Darling River Run. It is 696km north west of Sydney and is the centre for the surrounding rural area which is based around the production of wool, beef cattle, fat lambs, sheep studs and wheat.

Its attractive riverside location also makes it an ideal spot for fishing; Murray cod and yellowbelly being the prominent catcjes. If you are interested in bird watching then a trip out to the Macquarie Marches is well worth the effort.
